NYC Council Member Brad Lander, Participatory Budgeting

I served as a budget delegate on the Education Committee in District 39’s Participatory Budgeting process, during the 2017-2018 PBNYC Season.

The Participatory Budgeting process gives New Yorkers the power to decide how to spend tax dollars in their neighborhoods.  Budget delegates research ideas submitted by community members, developing proposals through talking to community stakeholders, assessing needs, touring spaces, and evaluating feasibility in conjunction with city agencies.  Budget delegates ultimately determine which projects make it to the final ballot.  Finally, residents from across the district come out to vote for their favorite projects and collectively decide which of the proposed projects will get funded.  See what's been funded before here.

In District 39, residents voted in April 2018 on how to allocate $1.5M toward capital projects and $50K toward expense projects. Brooklyn's District 39 includes the neighborhoods of Borough Park, Kensington, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Columbia Waterfront, Gowanus, Park Slope, and Windsor Terrace.
